- Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Engagement Photos in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan provided by Kari Dawson Photography.

Visiting the grounds of this beautiful mansion is a favorite of both locals and tourists. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. This 87-acre estate was designed by the renowned architect Albert Kahn in the pre-World War II era. With its stone roofs, vine-covered walls and lead-paned windows, the house was designed to resemble a cluster of Cotswold village cottages. Thankfully for engaged couples in the Detroit area, English charm is literally in their backyard.

He believed that the sky was a particularly important element in landscape composition. The Edsel Eleanor Ford House, a Cotswold-style mansion on Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, is a surprising blend of the conventional and the extraordinary. The house was also the very private domain of one of America's wealthiest families, invisible behind spreading lawns and stone gates and rarely photographed for a half century. Today it stands open, preserved and polished—a window on the grandeur of America's industrial aristocracy and the unexpectedly rich aesthetic lives of Eleanor and Edsel Ford. There are still many rooms where visitors are not permitted, including the basement. While the estate houses 60-plus rooms as well as other buildings, the public tours usually only showcase 20 of them.

Consequently, the landscaping has a deceptive openness that keeps the house from view until the visitor is nearly upon it. Jensen also remade some of the actual contours of the landscape, dredging a nearby cove and building up a sandbar into a wildlife sanctuary. Like ponds in a manicured meadow, his irregularly shaped 132-foot-long swimming pool drained into a lagoon and then into the lake beyond. Mrs. Ford wanted to have a rose garden installed but Jensen originally disapproved of this claiming that it would ruin the landscape which was designed to look completely natural. Jensen had previously quit on Henry Ford and Clara Ford, when Clara wanted to install a rose garden directly in the center of the backyard meadow at the Henry Ford Estate. Eleanor and Jensen eventually came to a compromise and the rose garden was placed behind some native bushes which was out of sight of the meadow that is the focal piece of the front lawn.

Two fifth-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the resident students change every year. Movie fans will recognize the house as Doc Brown’s mansion from the Back to the Future movie trilogy. The Gamble House is designated as California Historical Landmark #871 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926. The house is known for its unique design and colorful history.

In September 2006, the Eames House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. It was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #381 in July 1988. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio. Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. Self-guided walking tours of the exterior of Heritage Square Museum homes are currently available.

The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks. The house consists of two buildings that are separated by a courtyard. You can see the house in a number of movies including Blade Runner. About last night…thanks to @yielddesignco for inviting us into the sowden house and introducing us to your black dahlia cbd candle. That was epic and a long time dream of mine to see inside this historic lloyd wright house.
In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site. Having been the residence of the Schindlers and then other creatives, this WeHo hidden gem is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday as an architectural center. The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932.

It was built from 1961 to 1963 It was built as a cave-like dwelling that embraces nature. I am really looking forward to checking this one out in person in the future. The project is to reduce the impact of waves and flooding, reduce polluted runoff and nutrient loads and increase recreational fishing opportunities. It also is to increase public access to the inaccessible shoreline for future educational and recreational activities, according to a Ford House release.
The rooms were all connected together, Jack and Jill style. The governess’ room was located between the youngest boys’ rooms. Edsel II’s room featured more modern decor including a table with a built-in radio and a modern bathroom. During your visit to Ford House, experience an extraordinary meal with a beautiful view of Lake St. Clair!
Several restoration projects have been started in recent years, most of which were to fix the deteriorating masonry on the main house, the play house, and the various walks. The Edsel Ford house relies on donations as well as an original trust set up by Mrs. Ford to continue restoration work. Mrs. Ford left a total of $15 million when she handed the house over in trust in the 1970s.
The Annenberg Community Beach House opened to the public in April 2009. The site is open daily and is also used as a special events/wedding venue and filming location. Although visiting the Ford House in December did not enable the group to see the gardens, descriptions of the work of landscape architect Jens Jensen enlightened them about this additional beautiful feature of the grounds. Docents led the tours of the beautiful home decorated for Christmas. They provided details about the lifestyle of Edsel, Eleanor and their four children, as well as information about the rooms and their decor.

Discover the inspiration of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, where picturesque architecture surrounded by beautiful landscapes takes you inside the story one of America’s most prominent automotive families. Edsel Ford – the only son of Henry and Clara Ford – became president of Ford Motor Company in 1919 at the age of 25. We started in one of the gorgeous gardens at the Ford House before meandering through their favorite areas of the property. Bailey and Fred live nearby and they enjoy evening strolls through the property on a regular basis. I always love when couples choose a location for their engagement session that resonates on a personal level.
(To this day English workers are brought in to make repairs.) The same craftsmen installed the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century paneling and other architectural details culled by the Fords from old English manors. The library was designed around seventeenth-century oak paneling and a Caen stone chimneypiece from Deene Park, while eighteenth-century pine paneling from Spitalfields was seamlessly installed in the morning room. The house contains elements from six English estates, including a circa 1600 staircase from Lyvedon Old Bield Manor in Northamptonshire.
